North Korea quits nuclear talks

Looks like the administrations plan to let the U.N. handle North Korea is not working out so well. King Jong Il is doing the blackmail thing again.

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea said on Tuesday it would quit international nuclear disarmament talks and restart a plant that makes bomb-grade plutonium after the United Nations chastised it for launching a long-range rocket.

The U.N. Security Council on Monday unanimously condemned North Korea’s launch on April 5 as contravening a U.N. ban, and demanded enforcement of existing sanctions against Pyongyang.

The trick now is that after the U.N. makes the demand for enforcement will they follow through with it. They have a history of dropping the ball on these things.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) – The five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and Japan have reached an agreement on a draft statement about North Korea’s long-range rocket launch last weekend, envoys said on Saturday.

a draft?

British U.N. Ambassador John Sawers confirmed the agreement after a nearly 2-hour meeting with his counterparts from the United States, France, China, Russia and Japan. U.S. Ambassador Susan Rice said, “We think this text sends a clear message.”

I am sure Kim Jong-il won’t postpone his election party (which he seems to have won quite handily.)
