Obama says debt unsustainable

Obama Says U.S. Long-Term Debt Load ‘Unsustainable’ (story here!)

Is this guy a whack-job or does he really think the tax paying public is that stupid?

Wait – it could be both….

Did you hear about Pelosi?

If not you been living under a rock! Since every blog on the internet is talking about this I will add a post here. Nancy is having a really bad week in her squabble over what she knew when concerning the torture briefings.

pelosi_knew

In a typical asshat move she accused the CIA of misleading her and congress in 2002 during congressional hearings. Not a fight I would think one would take on from her position but sometimes the mouth gets ahead of the brain (not hard when the brain is AWOL.)

We here at Hangar Dogs are watching this one and we will be talking about it on this weeks podcast.

Chris Matthews – Navy Seals got lucky!

heh -- here is a guy that needs to spend a few days learning what it takes to be a SEAL and what they consider luck….

Global Warming ‘Victims’

Report: Climate Provision Would Allow Global Warming ‘Victims’ to Sue

The Washington Times reports that a provision in a bill authored by Democratic Reps. Henry Waxman of California and Edward Markey of Massachusetts would allow global warming victims to sue.

The provision, which was just released, reportedly would set grounds for plaintiffs who has “suffered” or expect to suffer “harm” attributable at least in part to government inaction. The provision defines “harm” as “any effect of air pollution (including climate change),” according to the Times. Plaintiffs could seek up to $75,000 in damages a year from the government, with $1.5 million being the maximum total payout.

I hope this one does not make it to Obama’s desk.

3 judge panel declares Franken winner

Well now we have another clown in the senate. I still don;t understand why they did not just do the vote over. There is no way an election should be decided by a few hundred votes. The potential fraud on either side is enough to void the election IMHO.

A Minnesota court ruled Monday night that Democrat Al Franken has defeated Republican Norm Coleman and should be granted the election certificate that will allow him to take his seat in the U.S. Senate.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said in a statement late Monday night that, while the court said that Franken is the winner, Coleman is entitled to take his case to the state Supreme Court. “If he does so, we look forward to a prompt decision from that court so that Gov. Pawlenty can issue an election certificate and we can finally bring an end to an episode that has left the people of Minnesota without full representation for too long and has cost taxpayers too much money,” Reid said.

UPDATE: Coleman will appeal

North Korea quits nuclear talks

Looks like the administrations plan to let the U.N. handle North Korea is not working out so well. King Jong Il is doing the blackmail thing again.

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea said on Tuesday it would quit international nuclear disarmament talks and restart a plant that makes bomb-grade plutonium after the United Nations chastised it for launching a long-range rocket.

The U.N. Security Council on Monday unanimously condemned North Korea’s launch on April 5 as contravening a U.N. ban, and demanded enforcement of existing sanctions against Pyongyang.

The trick now is that after the U.N. makes the demand for enforcement will they follow through with it. They have a history of dropping the ball on these things.

Iowa leading California (go K-man)

Iowa is in the news and stealing California’s thunder.

California’s having an identity crisis.

Once the West Coast glowed with prosperity and was the harbinger of hip new things. Now it’s in the grip of recession and repression. California’s cool has been stolen by, of all places, Iowa.

White-bread, cornfed, understated Iowa was the first state to ratify the black rookie Barack Obama and has usurped the role everyone thought California would play as a leader in the fight to give gays the right to marry.

Now it’s flyover country that’s starting high-flying trends.

Way to go K-man! I hope this does not catch on in my home state of Michigan….got enough crap with the GM bailout.

UPDATE: Michigan is entertaining reparations for gays – damn!

Another “Shovel Ready” project

Leaders urge Obama to use stimulus for beach sand

Some cities want bridges and schools from the federal stimulus plan.

Virginia Beach wants all of that and sand, too.

Beach officials are concerned the Obama administration will disqualify sand replenishment projects from receiving stimulus cash and have launched a pre-emptive lobbying effort.

Mayor Will Sessoms sent a letter to members of the city’s congressional delegation asking that Virginia Beach get $10 million to replace sand at the Oceanfront.

beach

While this project is probably needed it seems a stretch to use stimulus fund in my humble opinion.

Operation Big Beach, the city’s and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ last major beach replenishment effort, ended in 2002. Since then, parts of the Oceanfront have eroded by 70 feet to about 200 feet wide, Roehrs said.

“It’s now slightly less than it should be,” Roehrs said.

OK so the beach needs work – seems to me that this is something that is recurring and is in the planned budget right?

The dust-up over this stimulus money is part of a long-standing debate about whether the federal government should pay for any beach replenishment efforts. Both the Clinton and Bush administrations didn’t think so and argued it was a local expense.

“The question is who should pay for it,” said James V. Koch, an economist and former Old Dominion University president.

A big beach helps Virginia Beach bring in more tourists and prevents flooding, Koch said, but should Midwest taxpayers pay for the sand?

Duh! Good point…..

Pirates Vow Revenge

While the current crisis is over this will happen again and again unless the world governments act to stop it.

MOGADISHU (Reuters) – The U.S. Navy shot dead three Somali pirates and rescued cargo ship captain Richard Phillips on Sunday from a lifeboat off the coast of Somalia where he was being held captive, ending a five-day standoff.

Phillips’ life was in danger when Navy snipers aboard a nearby U.S. destroyer shot his Somali captors, freeing him unharmed and killing three of the four pirates who had held him after trying to seize his vessel, the Navy said.

Triple snaps to the Navy for ending this in spite of BO and his desire for a “peaceful solution.”

Obama, spared from having another thorny foreign policy crisis added to his troubles with the U.S. economic meltdown and the war in Afghanistan, welcomed the rescue, praised the U.S. military and vowed to curb rampant piracy.

“To achieve that goal, we must continue to work with our partners to prevent future attacks, be prepared to interdict acts of piracy and ensure that those who commit acts of piracy are held accountable for their crimes,” he said in a statement.

Be prepared to interdict? That is a lot of water for even a combined effort to patrol.

Somali pirates were quick to vow revenge over the shooting of their comrades, as well as a French military assault to rescue a yacht on Friday.

“The French and the Americans will regret starting this killing. We do not kill, but take only ransom. We shall do something to anyone we see as French or American from now,” Hussein, a pirate, told Reuters by satellite phone.

Sounds like we may be in for more trouble and it is probably not an empty threat.  Our friend A.J. over at Beyond Seven Seconds has an idea to slow down the pirate activity.

Treasury Directs GM to Prepare for Bankruptcy Filing

Update on the Government Motors (GM) bailout.

The Treasury Department is directing General Motors to lay the groundwork for a bankruptcy filing by a June 1 deadline, despite GM’s public contention that it could still reorganize outside court, people with knowledge of the plans said during the weekend.

Not that we here at Hangar Dogs are opposed to the bankruptcy solution but…..

The preparations are aimed at assuring a GM bankruptcy filing is ready should the company be unable to reach agreement with bondholders to exchange roughly $28 billion in debt into equity in GM and with the United Automobile Workers union, which has balked at granting concessions without sacrifices from bondholders.

This part I don’t quite understand – why are the bond holders required to sacrifice? It looks like they are not to pleased with the plan.

One plan under consideration would create a new company that would buy the “good” assets of GM almost immediately after the carmaker files for bankruptcy.

So far so good…..

Less desirable assets, including unwanted brands, factories and health care obligations, would be left in the old company, which could be liquidated over several years.

I am pretty sure that’s what bankruptcy proceedings do.

Treasury officials are examining one potential outcome in which the “good GM” enters and exits bankruptcy protection in as little as two weeks, using $5 billion to $7 billion in federal financing, a person who had been briefed on the prospect said last week.

Again I am not sure why we (taxpayers) are financing this but…..

The rest of GM may require as much as $70 billion in government financing, and possibly more to resolve the health care obligations and the liquidation of the factories, according to legal experts and federal officials.

Wait…$70B – holy cow folks….dump $70B into a bankrupt company? Its not like you are going to get that back.
